This cocktail is a variation of the classic old fashioned but with an apple twist. It’s the perfect whiskey drink to sip on all fall long!

A lowball glass has been filled with a brown Apple Old Fashioned and a large clear block of ice. It is garnished with a dehydrated apple slice and a cinnamon stick.

When fall approaches, our consumption of bourbon and apples increases at least ten fold. They go together like peanut butter and jelly!

We wanted to incorporate the two flavors into a cocktail that’s perfect to sip on while sitting by the fire in your favorite flannel.

Back in the summer, we made a peach old fashioned. You guys loved it so much that it only made sense to make an apple version. The result is even more delicious than we imagined.

Ingredients

All the ingredients to make an apple old fashioned sit on a black background - a bottle of apple cider, bitter, bourbon, and two cubes of brown sugar.

  • Whiskey – I recommend using a bourbon as I think it pairs best with the apple flavor. Straight rye whiskey is a good alternative. Read my list of best whiskeys for old fashioneds for more ideas.
  • Apple Cider – Homemade or store bought apple cider are both fine. (My crockpot apple cider is delicious!)
  • Bitters – I like to use orange bitters, just like a classic old fashioned.
  • Sugar – Brown sugar has the best flavor for this recipe, but white sugar can also be used. Sugar cubes are traditional, but you can substitute 1 teaspoon of sugar if you don’t have any.

Tips

  1. It’s better to use a large piece of ice, because smaller pieces of ice melt faster and dilute your drink. You can easily make big pieces in this silicone mold.
  2. Be sure to stir instead of shaking. The old fashioned is meant to simply be stirred together. For best results only stir for 30 seconds or less, you want to chill the whiskey without melting the ice.

How To Garnish

I chose to garnish mine with a dehydrated apple slice and a cinnamon stick. Other good alternatives would be to use apple slices, or a lemon/orange peel.
