On Old Fashioned is one of the best whiskey cocktails, in my humble opinion. It’s a relatively simple drink that combines whiskey, sugar, and bitters. Because the spirit is the main ingredient, the whiskey you choose can make or break it!
I’ve done the super hard work and tedious research of trying dozens of different whiskeys in our old fashioned drinks so you don’t have to!
We compiled the short list below of our absolute favorites to use in everything from an apple old fashioned, to a peach old fashioned, or even our Christmas old fashioned recipe.
#1 – Double Oaked Woodford Reserve Bourbon
Bourbon is always my first choice. Woodford Reserve double oaked has been aged nine extra months from their standard bourbon. The result is an ultra smooth, rich, buttery flavor that creates a luxurious old fashioned cocktail.
#2 – Michter’s Straight Rye Whiskey
Michter’s is my go to when I desire a rye old fashioned. This whiskey has a lot of notes – citrus, pepper, oak, cherry, and butterscotch to a name a few. All of them come together beautifully to make a rich and flavorful old fashioned.
#3 – Basil Hayden
Basil Hayden has a moderate ABV, which makes it perfect for new whiskey drinkers. It’s very light bodied and is a great spirit choice for anyone seeking an easy to sip old fashioned.
#4 – Buffalo Trace Bourbon
Another great bourbon option is Buffalo Trace. It’s widely available and sold at a great price point. It’s perfect with those who are looking for a budget-friendly whiskey that still has a great taste.
#5 – High West Rye
High West Double Rye is a blend of two ryes – one that is bold and one that is spicy. The result is a bold and complex whiskey that is perfect when you want an old fashioned with lots of flavor notes.
