Crunchy fried pickles are covered in Nashville Hot sauce to make a delicious spicy appetizer. Perfect for game day!

Are you ready for our newest Nashville Hot creation – Nashville Hot Fried Pickles?!? It has quickly become our favorite way to utilize Nashville Hot sauce and we’re very excited to share it with you!

We essentially took our chicken fried pickles and basted them with our Nashville Hot sauce. The acidity of the pickle combined with the crunchy breading and flavorful heat makes this one of the best tasting appetizers ever!

You will need a way to fry the pickles. I really like using a deep fryer because it makes regulating the temperature very easy, which is important. You can, however, use a cast-iron skillet or deep ceramic pot.

Ingredients

  • Pickles – We prefer to use dill pickle spears for this recipe, but you can use pickle chips if you’d prefer.
  • Buttermilk – We like to use real buttermilk if possible, but if you’re in a pinch you can make your own by adding 2 tablespoons of white vinegar to 2 cups of milk. Stir together, then let sit for 10 minutes.
  • Eggs – Be sure to use large eggs for this recipe.
  • Hot Sauce – Louisiana-style hot sauce is best for this recipe. We prefer Crystal.
  • Flour – We use a combination of white & whole wheat flour for fried pickles, but you can use all white if that’s what you have on hand.
  • Paprika – This recipe uses standard or “sweet” paprika.
  • Cayenne – The heat in this recipe mostly comes from the cayenne. You can easily adjust the spice level to your personal preference by increasing or decreasing it.
  • Brown Sugar – Use dark brown sugar and be sure to pack it when measuring.
  • Salt – We used traditional table salt.
  • Pepper – We used traditional black pepper.
  • Oil – We use canola or peanut oil for frying.

Ingredients

Chicken Fried Pickles

1 24oz Jar of Pickle Spears

2 Cups of Buttermilk

2 Eggs

2 tsp Louisiana Hot Sauce (we use Crystal)

2 Cups Whole Wheat Flour

1 Cup Flour

2 teaspoons Salt

1 teaspoon Paprika

1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper

Oil, for frying

Nashville Hot Sauce

1/2 Cup Butter

1.5 Tablespoons Cayenne (increase or decrease according to your heat preference)

3/4 Tbsp Brown Sugar

1/2 Tsp Salt

1/4 Tsp Pepper

1/2 Tsp Paprika

1/2 Tsp Garlic Powder

Instructions

Chicken Fried Pickles

Drain pickles and set aside.

Add buttermilk, hot sauce, and eggs to a large bowl. Whisk to combine.

In another bowl, combine the flour, salt, paprika, and cayenne pepper. Stir to combine. Drizzle a small amount of buttermilk over the top of the flour. Use a fork to stir. This should create little clumps of flour that will help make our fried pickles extra crispy.

One by one, submerge each pickle in the buttermilk mixture, shake off any excess, then dredge in the flour.

Fry 5-6 pickles at a time at 375 degrees F in a deep fryer or a cast iron skillet. Fry them 3-5 minutes, until golden brown and crispy.

Remove from oil and place on a cooling rack over a sheet pan.

Nashville Hot Sauce

Melt butter in a stove-top pot or in the microwave. Add the spices & sugar and whisk until well combined.

Brush over each fried pickle spear and serve immediately.

This is even better than Nashville Hot Chicken! The tangyness of the pickle really adds a lot. I will be making them again for sure.
