This version of homemade Cane’s sauce has the “secret ingredient” all the others are missing! Add it and you can make the perfect copycat sauce to dip your chicken tenders and fries.

A white dinner plate has a small jar of light pink sauce with visible specs of black peppers and other spices. It is surrounded by crispy chicken tenders and wavy fries.

There are so many dipping sauces out there, but I SWEAR Cane’s sauce reigns supreme.

I grew up near the birthplace of Raising Canes, but unfortunately moved to the West coast where I was forced to live without their delicious chicken tenders and sauce for over a decade.

What to do when craving a box? Well, I learned to make an almost exact copycat of Raising Cane’s bread and my buttermilk chicken tenders are even better than theirs, so all I was missing was the sauce…

After dissecting the ingredient list on their website (contains fish?! Must be Worcestershire!) and speaking to a few previous employees, I tried many different combinations and ratios.

The “secret” ingredient? A hint of lemon, delivered by the way of dehydrated lemon peel.

It’s very subtle, and some people absolutely refuse to believe there is citrus in the sauce, but I have it on good authority that part of that lemon peel is part of the seasoning mix they use.

Try it for yourself and let me know what you think!

Ingredients

A bottle of ketchup, mayonnaise, garlic salt, cayenne pepper, black pepper, powdered lemon peel, and worcestershire sauce all on a black background.
  • Ketchup – I recommend using Heinz for this sauce.
  • Mayo – Use a high-quality mayonnaise like Duke’s or Hellman’s.
  • Worcestershire – I don’t recommend trying to substitute this.
  • Lemon peel – The “secret” ingredient! I use powdered lemon peel.
  • Seasonings – Salt, black pepper, onion powder, cayenne and garlic salt.
  • Sugar – You can leave this out if you’d prefer, but a touch of sugar helps to bring out the full flavor of the seasonings.

Tips

  1. This sauce tastes the best after all the flavors have had at least a few hours to meld together. Overnight is ideal.
  2. Double the cayenne or add 1/2 tablespoon of hot sauce to make a spicy version.
  3. Store in a squeeze bottle for easy serving. It makes less mess, and is great for drizzling on sandwiches or burgers.
