Make the infamous bang bang shrimp dish at home in your air fryer! Crispy breaded shrimp served with a creamy sweet and spicy sauce.

A serving bowl lined with crisp, green lettuce leaves then filled with crispy breaded air fried shrimp drizzled in bang bang sauce.

It’s literally impossible to go to Bonefish Grill and not order the bang bang shrimp. Those crispy, crunchy savory shrimp covered in sweet and spicy sauce stay on my mind 24/7!

To satisfy my cravings when I can’t make it to the restaurant, I started cooking my own at home in the air fryer.

It comes out just as delicious, but has the added bonus of being cooked with less oil. My favorite part – clean up is a breeze compared to using a deep fryer. It’s definitely in my top 5 best restaurant copycat recipes!

Ingredients

All the ingredients needed to make air fried bang bang shrimp laid out in small prep bowls.
  • Shrimp – Medium shrimp (30-40 size) is ideal for this recipe. Adjust cooking times accordingly for small or jumbo shrimp.
  • Flour – This recipe is developed with all-purpose flour.
  • Eggs – Large eggs are used in this dish.
  • Panko – Use Panko for the best crunch. Italian bread crumbs can be substituted in a pinch.
  • Seasonings – Paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper.
  • Olive Oil Spray – Use store-bought olive oil spray or make your own with olive oil and one of these.
  • Mayo – Any brand of mayo will work. Kewpie delivers a great flavor.
  • Sweet Chili Sauce – Mae Ploy is my favorite brand, but any will work.
  • Sriracha – Increase or decrease the amount of Sriracha to achieve the heat level you like.
  • Green Onions – Optional garnish.

How to make

Step 1

Coat each piece of shrimp in flour, egg, then Panko.

Step 2

Place in air fryer basket and cook for 8-12 minutes at 375F, until shrimp are golden brown and crispy.

Step 3

To make the sauce, place the mayo, sriracha, and sweet chili sauce in a small bowl. Stir to combine.

Step 4

Drizzle the bang bang sauce over the shrimp, or serve it on the side and dip each individual piece in it.

A pair of chopsticks holds a crispy breaded shrimp that's being dipped in a bowl or orange colored bang bang sauce.

Tips

  1. Use a large air fryer like the Corsi Pro, or work in batches in using one with a smaller basket. Do not over crowd or layer the shrimp.
  2. If working in batches, place cooked shrimp on a metal cooling rack on top of a baking sheet. Place in the oven at 200F to keep warm.
  3. If it’s difficult to find fresh shrimp in your area, buy frozen shrimp and thaw them in the refrigerator before cooking.

What to serve it with

Serve by itself as an appetizer, or as a main dish with rice (Instant Pot coconut rice is delish!), pasta or a side salad.

It’s always a hit for game day along with other snack and finger foods like fried pickles, chicken tenders, and honey lemon pepper wings.

Prep Time: 8 minutes mins
Cook Time: 12 minutes mins
Servings: 4

Ingredients

Shrimp

  • 12 ounces medium shrimp, 30-40, peeled and deveined, tails off
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 eggs, whisked
  • 1 1/2 cups panko bread crumbs
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Olive oil spray
  • 2 green onions for garnish, optional

Sauce

  • 1/2 cup mayo, room temperature
  • 3 teaspoons sriracha sauce, or to taste
  • 1/4 cup Thai sweet chili sauce

Instructions

  • Set up your breading station by placing the flour and whisked eggs in two separate shallow bowls.
  • In another shallow bowl, combine panko breadcrumbs, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, kosher salt, and black pepper. Dip each raw shrimp in the flour, then in the whisked eggs, and, finally, coat both sides in the seasoned panko mixture.
  • Preheat your air fryer to 375 degrees F and lightly spray the shrimp and the air fryer basket with oil.
  • Arrange the breaded shrimp in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you might need to work in batches.
  • Cook the breaded shrimp for 8-12 minutes, flipping them halfway through, until the shrimp are fully cooked and have a golden brown, crispy exterior.
  • While the shrimp are cooking, mix mayo, sriracha sauce, and sweet chili sauce in a bowl. Adjust the spice level of the sauce to taste by gradually adding sriracha.
  • Once the shrimp are done, drizzle the bang bang sauce over the golden brown, crispy shrimp. The shrimp are done when they reach an internal temperature of 145 degrees F.
  • Serve the shrimp immediately while they are hot and flavorful. Garnish with green onions.
